4-H Youth Development

4-H assists urban and rural youth to acquire knowledge, develop skills and form attitudes that will enable them to become self-directed and productive members of society. 4-H is open to all Harford County youth between the ages of 8-18. The Clover program specifically focuses on youth 5-7 years of age. Youth may participate in the program in different ways ... COMMUNITY CLUBS are neighborhood clubs led by adult volunteers that offer a variety of project interests. COUNTY-WIDE CLUBS & SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS bring youth together from across the county to develop skills in a particular area of interest such as: Dairy, Horticulture, Dogs, Small Pets, Horses, Rabbits, Livestock, Fashion, Archery, Sheep and Junior Leaders. AFTER-SCHOOL CLUBS & IN-SCHOOL PROGRAMS provide opportunities for 4-H work and youth development in conjunction with school curriculum work. These clubs can be formed by a volunteer leader or professional teacher serving as a leader. The 4-H slogan is "Learn by Doing." There are many special events available to members like Public Speaking, Bicycle Rodeo, Fashion Revue, Teen Focus and Winter Workshop. In the summer, 4-H offers a summer camp, Rally Day and the 4-H Fair held in conjunction with the Harford County Farm Fair. 4-H youth learn to communicate with others, accept responsibility, be organized and make decisions. The program provides the opportunity for youth to socialize with peers while learning important leadership and life skills. 4-H is an all-volunteer organization. Interested adults are encouraged to share their expertise with youth by becoming a club leader or volunteering to organize a specific short-term activity.
