Local History: Garrett County was the last of Maryland’s 23 counties to be chartered in 1872 after having been a part of Allegany County for 83 years. The county was named after John W. Garrett, who at that time was the president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.

Garrett County is the most western county in the state with 662 sq. miles of land and is the second largest in the state. It lies within the Appalachian Plateau and the elevation runs from 2,300 feet to 3,360 feet above sea level. Located within the county is DeepCreekLake, with 65 miles of shoreline is the largest inland body of water in the state.

The rural areas outside of town limits make up of 76.1% of the total population of 30,100 residents. There are over 600 farms businesses, most of which are family-owned, handed down generation to generation.
