Enrollments
In October of each year, Charles county 4-Hers are required to re-enroll. There are three forms that need to be filled out; membership application, code of conduct and an animal ethics form. Each club may have different by-laws regarding enrollment. Some may accept new members all year but others may have a limited enrollment. You need to ask about the club by-laws if you have a question.
How old do I have to be to be in 4-H?
The 4-H Clover program is for kids ages 5-7 and the general 4-H program is for kids 8-18.
4-H is for farm kids, right?
Sure. But its also for city kids, town kids and well, kids everywhere! The great thing about 4-H is its versatility. YOU choose the projects you want -- they range from livestock to sewing to conserving our earth to marksmanship to gardening to community service. There is something for everyone. See http://www.agnr.umd.edu/ces/4h/pubs/projectguide/home.html for a listing of the projects available.
How do I join?
Visit the extension office to find out which club is for you. Or you can contact a club leader and sign up directly with them.
What are these "clubs"?
4-H members are also members of individual clubs. The clubs meet at a central place to the members to work on projects that are important to that particular club. Some clubs have a definite focus such as horses or fishing. Others are more general in their focus. No matter which club you join though you can do a wide range of projects. You can also belong to more than one club. Its a great way to meet other 4-H members and make new friends.
Besides projects what else can I do?
4-H also offers annual events such as public speaking contests, various judging contests such livestock, consumer and wildlife, nutrition bowls, and day and overnight camps. 4-Hers are also very involved in the county and state fairs. Certain judging teams allow you to win trips to national contests that are held in different states.
