Calvert County Fair Youth Day Master Gardener booth |
![]() |
For five days in late September, the annual Calvert County Fair (calvertcountyfair.com) is a local showcase for agricultural, civic and business organizations. On the popular Youth Day at the Fair, the Calvert County Board of Education grants all schoolchildren a Friday holiday, and they are invited to attend the Fair free of charge on that day.
As part of CCMG’s community outreach and education activities, the Master Gardeners set up an information and activity tent at the Fair. Children line up to play the popular gardening awareness game, Bay-Wise Jeopardy, and create nature-inspired crafts while enjoying complimentary snacks. Parents have an opportunity to talk with Master Gardeners about their specific gardening concerns. Lots of useful brochures and resource information are available on a variety of gardening and conservation topics.
At the 2007 Youth Day, children made butterfly garden bookmarks out of construction paper and twine, to which they added butterfly garden facts. Master Gardeners greeted a total of 320 people that day, and plans are already underway for the 2008 event.
The CCMG Booth at Youth Day at the Fair is a great opportunity to meet other gardeners, share your special gardening tips, and find answers to your lawn and garden problems. Volunteer assistance with the program is always welcome. The Fair is held at the County Fairgrounds off Rte 231 in Barstow, two miles west of Rte 2/4.

CHILDREN’S DAY ON THE FARM
AT
JEFFERSON PATTERSON PARK & MUSEUM
Each year, on the first Sunday in June, the Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum helps children celebrate Southern Maryland’s rural heritage during the Children’s Day on the Farm.
This fun-filled, day-long event offers children the opportunity to enjoy numerous activities from arts and crafts, live entertainment and a petting zoo, to pony rides and face painting. Demonstrations such as spinning and weaving, tobacco doll-making, corn shelling, beekeeping, and decoy carving (to name a few) help children understand what life was like on farms of the past. There is even a display of antique farm machinery.
The Calvert County Master Gardeners (CCMG) participate annually in this exciting event by engaging children in seed planting activities designed to awaken their interest in gardening. Various educational and resource information is distributed, and Master Gardeners are available to answer lots of questions the children (or their parents!) may have about successful gardening in the Southern Maryland area Children’s Day on the Farm is held annually on the first Sunday in June, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, rain or shine. The event is free to the public. Additional information about the Children’s Day at the Farm and the Jefferson Patterson Park & Museum can be found at http://www.jefpat.org/
