2006 Master Gardener Programs

Master Gardener Training
New Master Gardener trainees completed classes held during March at the LaPlata Cooperative Extension Office. A final MG gathering was held on March 2 where new volunteers met with other Master Gardeners and enjoyed a potluck lunch. Training topics among others included: basic horticulture; Chesapeake Bay pollution; lawn care; pond management; composting; native plants; landscaping; and hardscape. New graduating Master Gardeners will now begin completing additional volunteer Master Gardener training and volunteer hours requirements.
Landscape Workshop
The 2006 Landscape Workshop was a well-attended event with 108 people at the Southern Maryland College. The program covered topics such as turf care, pruning, container gardening, composting yard waste, and plant diseases among others. Examples of landscape shrubs and trees were offered for use in home landscapes. This all-day affair is the second workshop sponsored by Charles County Master Gardeners and it proved to be very successful.
LaPlata Library Project - Joan Crownover
A Charles County Master Gardener Information Table was held at the LaPlata Library Branch during the month of April. Master Gardeners participating in this effort included: Diane Deshisler, Jay Spurlin, Ida Adams, Barbie Walter, Anita Adams-Lennon, and Betty Kostkowski. During Saturday mornings in April from 9 a.m. - noon (with the exception of Easter weekend), Master Gardeners offered University of Maryland handouts on a wide variety of topics. Over 250 people visiting the Library were provided with up-to-date gardening information. Most popular topics discussed with Library visitors at the Information Table included moles, deer, mosquitoes, and horticultural plant needs.
Christmas in April - Carol Teets
With the guidance of Carol Teets, Master Gardeners participated in the "Christmas in April" nonprofit effort to upgrade housing in Charles County. Inclement weather on the day of Master Gardener participation reduced some works, but the project continued to help provide plantings at various sites.
