How to Become A Charles County Master Gardener
To become a Charles County Master Gardener, adult residents must first complete a training course taught by University of Maryland faculty and other horticulture specialists.
Master Gardeners are trained in the following topics:
- Botany
- Entomology
- Ecology
- Native Plants
- Composting
- Diagnosing Plant Problems
- Flower, Vegetable, and Organic Gardening
- Pesticide Use and Safety
- Soils and Fertilizers
- Tree and Shrub Care
- Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
- Lawn Care
In the picture above, the 2006 class members enjoy a chilly moment outside the classroom for their class picture. The training class is held each winter, and the next class runs from February 21 to March 29, 2012. To apply for the program and register for the class, complete the attached form.
After completing the class, participants must complete 40 hours of volunteer service in any one of the many ongoing volunteer efforts or by developing a new project. After completing the volunteer service, participants are certified as Charles County Master Gardeners.
To maintain certification, Master Gardeners complete 20 hours of volunteer service and 10 hours of advanced training each year. There are many opportunities for both. In fact, the wide variety of advanced training classes and workshops is one of the major benefits of becoming a Master Gardener. (Getting to know others who have a passion for gardening is another.)
