Tred Avon's Future: Preserving Our Watershed

The Bay-Wise campaign to clean up the Tred Avon watershed is on target. Since the kick-off event last March, Master Gardeners have conducted twenty-one workshops on a wide range of topics, held an art contest for Talbot County students in grades 3-12 and an essay contest whose prize was a free rain garden. Two demonstration rain gardens have been installed at the Talbot County Extension Office. More than a hundred soil tests have been performed. Twenty-seven Bay-Wise consultation visits and fourteen Bay-Wise certifications have been completed. More than one hundred thirty additional consultations have been requested. Some of these have been held and only await completion of their final reports; others are scheduled and more are being scheduled. A second event was held at the Avalon Theatre in October with indoor demonstration gardens, interactive demonstrations and exciting exhibits showing how we can all do our part to make our real world more "Bay-Wise". In this last quarter alone Master Gardeners have donated a total of 729 hours to this effort.

Eight of the twenty-one workshops are available in pdf format. The topics cover both spring and fall lawn care, soils, managing stormwater, controlling pests, integrated pest management, creation of a living shoreline, and plant recommendations ("Steel Magnolias") for our less than perfect growing conditions. You may access them by clicking on the topic list at the left.

Note cards are available showcasing the artwork of the six winners of the poster contest. The cost of the cards is $5 for a set of six or $8 for two sets. They may be purchased at the Talbot County Extension Office located at 28577 Mary's Court, Suite 1, Easton, Maryland 21601. You may see a collage of all six here or click on the artist's name at the left to see individual entries together with the artist's brief statement as to why he or she feels it is important to preserve the Chesapeake Bay and the waterways.

Additional workshops will be held beginning next February and IAL classes are scheduled for next May. A final event will also be held next spring.

Bay-Wise consultations are always free for any Talbot County resident.
