In June, 2007, the Charles County Master Gardeners cut out costumes and chopped vegetables in preparation of the encore of Pam King’s Bugs and Nutrition program.

A big hit in 2005, the Judy Centers requested that King, our Extension Agent, repeat this entertaining educational program for kindergarten and pre-kindergarten children at Eva Turner, Dr. Samuel A. Mudd, and C. Paul Barnhart Elementary Schools on July 2, 2007.

During the three shows, King explained the different parts of a plant while the Master Gardeners served the youngsters raw vegetables representing the root, stems, leaves, fruits, and flowers.

King also explains that both humans and bugs eat plants. However, the real stars of the show are eight bugs: beetles, moths, butterflies, grasshoppers, flies, scales, bees, and stinkbugs.

With assistance from the Master Gardeners, the children dress up as the bugs while King explains each bug’s characteristics with emphasis on how bugs eat. Can you imagine the reaction of the children when King explained that the fly spits on your sandwich as soon as it lands on it. None of these children will ever again eat anything on which a fly has landed.

This is a great program, but it takes a lot of preparation and willing hands. Deborah Carpenter and I want to express our thanks to Lin Murray, Joyce Rose, Barbara Hill, and Karen Elliott for all their help.
