Kiwi, also known as Chinese gooseberry or kiwifruit, is a small, brown, fuzzy, round fruit. It gets the name kiwifruit from a bird with the same
name - a kiwi bird. (Do you think they look the same??) Once cut open, kiwifruit have a bright green flesh, white center, and many tiny black seeds.
These fruits grow on long woody vines. There are over 40 varieties of kiwis. The brown fuzzy kind we often see in the grocery store prefers warm climates, like California. Kiwis provide us with vitamins C and E, potassium, and fiber. What a delicious way to keep healthy!
Where do we find these kiwis?
Kiwis are found in the produce section at our local grocery store. In addition to the kiwis with green flesh, you may also find golden kiwis with yellow flesh. If you’re looking for a quick, ready-to-eat snack, kiwis can also be found dried. Just watch for added sugars.
How do we pick the best kiwi?
Look for plump, slightly soft kiwis. Watch out for any bruises, wrinkly skin, or wet spots.
How do we store a kiwi?
Once you’ve brought your beautiful kiwi home, keep it on the counter if it is ripe. Ripe kiwis can also be stored in the fridge for a week or more, or frozen to enjoy much later. If your kiwi is not yet ripe, place it in a warm spot, like on top of the fridge. To speed up the process, put it in a brown paper bag with a piece of fruit - apple, banana, tomato.
How do we eat a kiwi?
Before chomping into your kiwi, rinse the fruit. Though it is usually peeled, you can eat the skin of the kiwi. Kiwis have a thin skin, so they can be peeled with a vegetable peeler or small knife. Kiwis have a sweet taste if ripe, but are a little tart if eaten before they’re ripe.
Beyond the recipes provided above, kiwis can be eaten just as they are. Try them peeled and sliced or chopped. Or, simply slice off the top, and use a spoon to dig in - just like a cup of yogurt. Freeze any leftover slices to flavor your water or blend in a smoothie.
