Project overview

The Baltimore County 4-H Cooperative Market goat project provides an opportunity for youth ages 8 – 18 (as of January 1, 2018) without the facilities to house livestock to participate in a market goat project.  Market goats will be housed at the Baltimore County Ag center and participants will be responsible for the care and feeding of the goats while learning about livestock management, animal health, and livestock showmanship.

Project requirements

1)    A completed application to participate in the program.
2)    Essay written by the 4-H member.
3)    Personal interview.
4)    Active participation in the educational program. (one per week)
5)     Scheduled visits to care for the goats. (average of once per week)
6)    Showing the goat at the Baltimore County 4-H Fair.
7)    Selling the goat at the Baltimore County 4-H Livestock sale.
8)    Promoting the 4-H Livestock sale to potential buyers.

Project expenses

All project expenses will be paid at the conclusion of the project after the sale of animals at the Baltimore County 4-H Livestock sale)

1)    Cost of animal
2)    Feed
3)    Miscellaneous costs – tags, vet, show supplies, etc.

Project timeline

The project will run from late April through the Baltimore County 4-H fair (July 12 – 15, 2018)

March 14, 2018 - Applications due to the 4-H office
March 16, 2018 - Interviews
March 22, 2018 - Notification of selected participants
March 30, 2018 - Meeting for selected members
May 7, 2018 – Beginning of project
July 12-15, 2018 - County Fair
