Description/Notes:

UME's Maryland-Delaware Master Logger Program will be partnering with West Virginia University Extension, the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE), and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (MD DNR) to provide continuing education for Maryland-Delaware Master Loggers at the Savage River State Forest.

Please join us for this in-woods workshop on “Harvest Unit Planning and Layout.”  This workshop will not be your typical sit at a table and look at a projector screen.  Instead, it will be out at an upcoming harvest unit, where we will discuss many of the planning and layout activities that should be completed before moving equipment onto the site.  Starting with map planning and in-woods reconnaissance, we’ll cover harvest unit layout options that will help you achieve a cost efficient and productive operation, that still provides strong erosion and sediment control.

This workshop will be led by Ben Spong, the West Virginia University Forest Operations Extension Specialist, with participant discussions on benefits and drawbacks to a wide variety of different approaches and techniques. The group will cover a wide range of topics including landing locations, road and skid trail location and design, cross drain options, stream crossings, schedule of operations, harvesting patterns, reclamation planning, and more. Featuring a visit from the MDE to discuss Stream-side Management Zones and Waters of the State.

We will meet at the New Germany State Park Lake House in Grantsville, MD at 8:00am and will move on to a site visit after introductions.

The cost is $20.00 per person which includes lunch and materials. To register, call or email Stephanie Jackson at (410) 827-8056, sjacks@umd.edu.

This workshop is eligible for 4 MD-DE Master Logger Continuing Education Credits.
