Jon Traunfeld is the PI. Trains interested residents to become volunteer horticulture educators for Maryland Cooperative Extension. Master Gardener Volunteers received 40 hours of basic training and then returned 40 hours of volunteer service in the year following training. Thereafter, they volunteered a minimum of 20 hours each year to maintain their Master Gardener (MG) status. MGs extended Maryland Extension information to a wide audience and are on the forefront of critical environmental and horticultural issues- integrated pest management, urban nutrient management, water quality, water conservation measures, organic gardening, and ID and control of non-native invasive species.
In 2007 Extension’s Master Gardener Program volunteers gave over 72,200 hours of their time to help Maryland citizens create sustainable gardens and landscapes and reduce the pollution of Maryland’s water resources at a value of $1,478,808. Master Gardeners in 15 Master Gardener programs taught 516 classes and workshops to 31,081 residents and conducted 561 plant clinics at 58 individual sites.
