Anne Arundel Central Elementary Rain Garden Program

The Master Gardener program of Anne Arundel County provides an educational program in Environmental Science/Horticulture for volunteers to strengthen their skills and knowledge to disseminate and interpret the latest research findings to the public. The Master Gardener mission is to educate residents about safe, effective and sustainable horticultural practices that build healthy gardens, landscapes and communities. Therefore, educational sessions are the heart and purpose of the Central Elementary Rain Garden. Children, faculty, staff, parents and the community learn how rain gardens help restore the Chesapeake Bay as part of a full-funded program titled "Better Days for the Bay".

It was a collaborative effort between 8 Anne Arundel Master Gardeners, students, Central Elementary staff and PTA families. The Master Gardeners provided recommendations of location, plant and growing materials and provided summary educational modules with students of the elementary school. Master Gardeners provided on-site assistance during the installation dates. There were 3 main project dates in addition to the regular planning and consultation meetings. Additionally, a meeting to consult with Arlington Echoes took place earlier in the project to afford the opportunity to install rain barrels at the rain garden project site to increase the rain garden's effectiveness.
