Bay-Wise Landscape Management

Wanda MacLachlan is the PI. This educational program teaches strategies that will first, change our view of the urban and suburban landscape and second, show how the environmental and ecological concepts of the late 20th and early 21st centuries can practically be used to transform urban landscapes into a healthy ecosystem.

Master Gardeners (MGs) learn the importance of water quality and how it can be maintained and improved. These Master Gardeners learn how to attract beneficial insects to their landscapes, how to recycle yard waste, conserve water, proper mowing heights of their lawns, how to integrate IPM and other environmentally sound horticultural practices into their lawn and garden maintenance plans, concepts of landscape ecology and ecologically sound landscapes that increase plant diversity, improve water and soil quality, and provide habitat for desirable wildlife.

Fifty-nine hundred and seventy-nine Montgomery County 4th graders from 37 different schools discovered the connections between water quality, agriculture and their environment during their field day at Close Encounters with Agriculture.
