Jonathan Kays and Nevin Dawson are the PI’s. This is a forest and wildlife volunteer training program that educates forest landowners each year about sound forest stewardship in a 3.5 day workshop, with the understanding that they will further extend what they have learned by sharing knowledge with family, friends, and their community. Program participants commit to 40 hours of extension work in the following year, which may take a variety of forms, including formal presentations, letters to the editor, property tours, or informal discussions. Forest landowners also agree to develop a forest stewardship plan (if they have not already), an essential step in good forest stewardship.
A total of 383 individuals have been trained since 1990. This workshop utilizes indoor and outdoor classroom techniques to teach volunteers how forest management is used to improve wildlife habitat and other forest benefits. Training in communication and outreach skills prepares participants for the return to their communities where they agree to share what they learn with friends, neighbors, and relatives by using their own properties as demonstration areas or through other outreach methods.
