Dr. Josh McGrath along with a research team from USDA-ARS is working on a prototype machine, known as the “Poultry Subsurfer.” Once fully developed, it will provide producers with a practical management option that has the potential to significantly improve the Chesapeake Bay watershed while at the same time improving farm profitability, air quality, and water quality on millions of acres. This practice of using a knifing technique to apply poultry litter under the soil surface can decrease runoff of nutrients by more than 90% and virtually eliminate ammonia-N emissions.
