Dr. Josh McGrath is the PI. The duration of this project is from the winter 2007 – winter 2008. The purpose is to develop and evaluate methods for prescribing variable rate nitrogen application on grain corn in Maryland in order to increase nitrogen use efficiency
The proposed project will seek to evaluate variable rate nitrogen (N) fertilizer application in Maryland corn production. Two technologies will be used to generate N fertilizer prescriptions: (i) Yield monitor data averaged over the previous 3 – 5 years (depending on availability) and (ii) Aerial imagery collected during the growing season, just prior to spring sidedress N application. These technologies will be compared to standard flat rate N application to determine if they can increase N-use efficiency while increasing farm profitability.
The current study is ongoing. By developing effective guidance programs on variable rate nitrogen use we will encourage implementation of nitrogen management practices that increase farm productivity and profitability while reducing nutrient losses to the environment through the use of innovative technologies.
