A new alternative crop is being studied by University of Maryland Extension for organic fruit production. The Black Chokeberry or Aronia, to which it is commonly referred, is an eastern U.S native with a long history of fruit production in Eastern Europe. Plant breeders in Eastern Europe recognized this plant's potential and created hybrids for larger fruit and yields. The Aronia fruit is loaded with antioxidents, far more than a blueberry. This make Aronia highly marketable, but as of yet, the fruit is relatively unknown. More and more farmers are growing this fruit in the Mid-West and the Mid-Atlantic states. This website has been developed to assist Aronia growers and those interested in knowing more about the fruit.
