Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) teaches participants the skills to recognize signs of mental health or substance use challenges in youth and adults, how to offer and provide initial help, and how to guide a person toward appropriate care if necessary. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, suicide, psychosis, and substance use disorders.

MHFA and Youth-MHFA are offered on an ongoing basis in a virtual-blended format. Participants complete a self-paced portion via an online learning platform, followed by a 6-hour live skills practice session in a group setting.

UME has trained MHFA and YMHFA instructors throughout the state of Maryland. Through the Maryland Rural Opioid Technical Assistance Program, classes targeting rural areas of Maryland may be offered at no cost to participants. Contact Dr. Alexander Chan (alexchan@umd.edu) to coordinate delivery of MHFA or YMHFA in your community.
