Master Gardener Basic Training

How Do You Become a Master Gardener?

In order to become a certified Maryland Master Gardener, one must:

  • Attend a 40 hour Basic Training Course taught by UME faculty
  • Pass the final written exam with a 75% or better
  • Receive volunteer policy training
  • Complete required volunteer forms
  • Provide 40 hours of volunteer service over the following year

How Do You Maintain Your Certification?

Certified Maryland Master Gardeners maintain their certification by providing 20 hours of volunteer service and obtaining 10 hours of continuing education each year after initial certification.

Master Gardener Basic Training in Allegany County

The Master Gardener Coordinator, Sherry Frick, holds a basic training course once a year, usually in the fall at Allegany College of Maryland. The course will be listed in ACM’s Continuing Education & Workforce Development fall catalog.  Registration for the course is handled by the college.  The course is frequently held twice a week, 3 hours per class, for 7 weeks.  You may attend the MG Basic Training course offered by the UME Garrett office if the time and location is more convenient for you.  Please call Sherry Frick, UME Allegany Master Gardener Coordinator for more information at 301-724-3320.

Master Gardener Forms (for current Master Gardener volunteers):

Volunteer logs are due to the office April 15, August 15, October 15. Final hours for the year are due January 15 of upcoming year. Logs can be sent as indicated below.
