Agriculture

Agriculture and natural resources are crucial to Maryland’s economy, environment and way of life of its residents. From the food we eat, to the flowers and plants in our homes, the landscaping of our yards, valuable real estate, beautiful coastal waters and fine recreational hunting all relate to the state’s agricultural land use.

Over two million acres are farmed in Maryland by a variety of crops, livestock and industries.  Commodities such as corn grain, soybeans and wheat feed poultry and livestock. Vegetable and fruit crops are grown in the local season for wholesale, retail and farmers markets. The nursery and greenhouse industry supplies residents, businesses and urban areas with plants, shrubs and trees.

The University of Maryland Extension is a source of research based agriculture technical information and is provided through various fact sheets, workshops, field days, one on one consultations and educational seminars. Major educational programs focus on commercial vegetable, fruit and field crop production; nursery and greenhouse production; nutrient management; integrated pest management; safety training for pesticide license certification; risk management; pasture and livestock management.

In Allegany County, the Agriculture and Natural Resources program offers a variety of educational programs to its citizens. These programs range from improved financial management techniques, forest management, improved forage production procedures, beef herd management, vegetable production, pesticide applicator training, and nutrient management planning.

Sherry Frick, Senior Agent Associate, Master Gardener Program Coordinator

Sherry Frick holds a BS in Biology from Towson University and a Master of Education from Frostburg State University. Ms. Frick previously worked as a Master Gardener Coordinator and Horticulture Assistant in the UME Garrett office, served as the Market Coordinator for Garrett Growers, a farmer’s co-op, and acted as an assistant plant breeder and the nursery and greenhouse manager for Five Aces Breeding, a strawberry and raspberry breeding company.

Ms. Frick has three years of experience performing tissue culture for a variety of plant species including raspberries, strawberries, hops, tomatoes, and asparagus. She is looking forward to serving Allegany County residents by expanding the agriculture and natural resource programming in addition to increasing the positive impact of Master Gardeners in the community.

Ms. Frick's special interests include incorporating native plants into the landscape and identifying medicinal and edible wild plants.
