Maryland Cooperative Extension Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Programs
Issue
Research-based education through information transfer is essential for ensuring that stakeholders can readily access IPM resources.
Actions
- Programs and projects are created and directed by Maryland Cooperative Extension (MCE) and Maryland Agricultural Experiment Station (MAES) faculty and staff.
- Representing the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the College of Chemical and Life Sciences, our extension and research faculty and staff network with the public and private sectors to reinforce and extend the adoption of IPM approaches.
- Three major program areas provide the activities and deliverables contributing to the Maryland commitment for increased involvement in, and accountability for, IPM implementation: Agricultural IPM, Green Industries IPM and Community/ Structural/Urban IPM.
Impacts
2007 Statewide Maryland IPM Program activities aiding in the promotion of IPM implementation by increasing stakeholder access to IPM alternatives include:
- The Maryland IPM Program Web Site, www.mdipm.umd.edu operates as a gateway to major IPM sites in our Maryland IPM Programs and also links to related sites in the state, region, and nation via National IPM networking. The site also houses state and national IPM Program Progress Reports and highlights Maryland IPM Program events. Trends in total “hits”, resources accessed, visitor demographics, and other technical statistics are monitored and summarized. Site upgrading, to ensure a “user friendly” system is a continuous process.
- The Annual State IPM Report continues to be successful in gathering and distributing information generated by Maryland IPM activities. The main vehicle for report dissemination was and will continue to be web based. The objective of this report continues to be the distribution of IPM Program information to stakeholders and state leaders in an effort to gain greater visibility, and therefore increased support, for IPM implementation.
- Pest Net, our IPM pest management information site, hosts reports and updates for the Mid-Atlantic states including a subscriber listserv for pest alert notifications.
