Drought and Water Conservation

Issue:
Water conservation and protection are necessary in today's society, especially in drought conditions.

Actions:

UME educates on matters relating to Water Conservation, targeting homes, farms, landscape industries, businesses, youth and others.
UME leads efforts in developing landscapes that include indigenous, native and resistant plant varieties that do not require irrigation or constant pesticide use.
UME provides conservation education to citizens on simple, inexpensive devices and practices they can use in their homes.
UME maintains an active web site focusing on drought and related issues.

Impacts:

Over 90,000 people have learned to use, reduce, or recycle their water properly.
Rain barrel workshops resulted in reuse of thousands of gallons of water.
Web site has received over 45,000 hits in the past 9 months.
Over 50 emails received each day requesting information.
People who practice these conservation methods save 30% daily on water usage for an estimated total daily savings of 5.4 million gallons.
