Issues:
- Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in Maryland andin the United States.
- Nationally, 1 out of 7 health-care dollars is spent ondiabetes.
- Diabetes costs about $98 billion each year in direct andindirect health-related costs. That includes $44 billion in directmedical and treatment costs and $54 billion in indirect costsattributed to disability and mortality.
Actions:Educators from MCE, in conjunction with their community partners,are delivering interactive Diabetes Education and Cooking Schoolsin eight Maryland counties (Montgomery, Prince George's, Frederick,Allegany, Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester).
Impacts:An evaluation instrument (pre and post intervention) has beendeveloped and pilot tested and focus group studies are beingconducted to evaluate program impact. The program has beendelivered to 2,241 participants, and in addition Montgomery Countyand Prince George's County have developed community resourcemanuals. A number of counties have also facilitated diabetesprevention activities through health fairs and other activities.
