Issue:
Nursery, greenhouse and landscape managers in Maryland's second largest agricultural industry (valued at $1.24 B in 2001) require cost-effective and environmentally safe materials and methods to control insects, diseases and make efficient use of water and nutrients.
Actions:
- Independent IPM scouts and growers receive regular updates issues via e-mail and the Internet.
- A UME team has developed a nationally recognized water and nutrient management planning process.
- A WebCT-based training course for water and nutrient management planning has trained growers and consultants throughout the U.S. and Canada.
Impacts:
- Participation in greenhouse IPM grew from 4 operations in 1996 to 41 operations in 2002.
- Nine nurseries in 11 counties are actively involved in the IPM program.
- A total of 21 consultants, 31 growers, 20 faculty or state personnel and 18 students have successfully completed the water and nutrient management planning course.
- Submission of 164 water and nutrient management plans to MDA by nursery and greenhouse growers, with 175 more plans being currently written.
