Issue:
Quality in child care has been linked to the education and professional training of its staff. Maryland Cooperative Extension offers professional development continuing education to the child care community statewide.
Actions:
- One- and two-clock hour classes are offered during evenings and weekends, at low cost, and available in every Extension office.
- Topics and levels of difficulty fit within the Maryland Credentialing System (Department of Human Resources).
Impacts:
Each year, University of Maryland Extension reaches approximately 1,800 professional child care providers with continuing education that can be used to maintain state registrations or licenses for child care. This training is consistently rated as being high quality and highly popular with provider audiences.
Local Activities:
- UME partners with local Child care Resource and Referral Agencies, community colleges, family resource centers and Judy Hoyer Early Learning Centers and other local agencies to add breadth and depth to child care learning opportunities.
- UME professionals sit on advisory councils of local Child Care Resource and Referral Centers (e.g., Montgomery County).
